Ani Difranco
Angela Maria Ani DiFranco was born in Canada and is American. Her catalog includes more than 20 albums. Her songs are classified by the label as alternative and folk. But, they have influences from hip hop as well as jazz and punk. Widely considered a feminist icon Grammy winner Ani DiFranco is the mother of the DIY movement, and was among the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. DiFranco is the daughter of Elizabeth (Ross), and Dante Americo DiFranco. They were introduced in The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her father is Italian descent, and her mother is from Montreal. Ani DiFranco composed and sang 32 Flavors. This song appeared on her fifth studio album Not a Pretty Girl which was released in 1995. One version of this song can be heard on the 1999 Canadian romantic film Better Than Chocolate. DiFranco has since apologized when it was revealed that she was hosting an event for three days on a Louisiana ex-slave plantation. The majority of us (including us) were not affected by her decision to cancel. DiFranco released a new apology days afterward. While she has been known as the Little Folksinger, her music has embraced many styles and collaborations that range from Pete Seeger to Chuck D to Prince. Her home is New Orleans. DiFranco graduated from her Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts high school at 16, and enrolled in classes at Buffalo State College.
